Commencement Student Speaker Selection
Eligibility Criteria
- Be eligible for graduation in the term for which you are applying
- Have a minimum 3.0 GPA
- Be in good disciplinary standing
- Must participate in Pocatello ceremony, but may attend classes at any ISU location
- One speaker will be chosen for each ceremony (morning and afternoon)
Application Process
Submit the following:
- Complete online application form
- Unofficial transcript
- Letter of recommendation from an ISU faculty or staff member, emailed directly from them to commencement@isu.edu
- Rough draft of speech, complete enough to convey the tone and content of your speech
- Applicant video of 90-120 seconds
- Topic is: Tell us why you should be the commencement speaker
- Goal is to demonstrate you are a competent, dynamic, and engaging speaker
- Upload via online application form
- Candidates may be asked to come in for a face-to-face meeting prior to selection
Guidelines
- Address should be between 3-4 minutes (approximately 400-500 words)
- Theme ideas:
- Experiences that define what it means to be a Bengal
- The transformative power of receiving an education at Idaho State
- How Bengals are changing the world
- No political or religious messages
- Final written speech must be submitted to organizers 1 week prior to Commencement
Selection Timeline (Winter 2020)
- September 21 - Application opens
- October 19 - Application closes
- November 2 - All applicants notified of decision
- November 13 - Final written speech due
- November 20 - Student rehearsal on stage
Additional Information
If you are selected to be the student speaker, you will:
- Be seated on the platform during the ceremony
- Have your name printed in the program
- Receive special reserved seating for your guests
Selection Committee will include staff, faculty, and student representatives.
