Each year, Dairy West holds a Sports Nutrition Symposium, a one-day event full of well-known exercise and nutrition experts, fun and interactive activities, and delicious food! This year’s event was held in Kearns, Utah at the Olympic Oval: Speed Factory. What an incredible facility! Dairy West always works to hold these events at creative venues that inspire and educate!
We toured the speed skating arena, the new training table kitchen, the weight room, and the fueling station. We saw first-hand how the athletes, trainers, dietitians, coaches, and specialists worked together to create a place that builds Olympic athletes. In the morning, we were able to hear from Jim White, an RDN and Exercise Physiologist, discuss the difference between “science and sensationalism”.
Amy Goodson, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist for professional athletes and Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics, spoke to us about nutrient timing to enhance sports performance. These presentations were full of immediately applicable information!
In the afternoon, we were able to watch a food demonstration by Alan Tran, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics and High Performance Chef for the Olympic athletes in Park City. He was a blast! He showed us how to make Chicken Tikki Masala and rice in an InstaPot. It was delicious, full of anti-inflammatory spices, easy to prepare and quick to cook! Perfect for our busy athletes AND for us busy non-athletes!
The last speaker, a researcher from Texas A&M, Melinda Sheffiled-Moore, PhD, and head of the Department of Health and Kinesiology, talked to us about exercise, nutrition, and blood flow working together for metabolic health.
Oh, and in there somewhere, we were taken to the weight room for a quick Tabata workout with the Athletic Trainer! It was so fun! I guess Dairy West wants us to practice what we preach, even at a conference.
