Data Science through Mathematics
This course will focus on building awareness of how data is used in Idaho industries. It will help them define data science and show connections between the Idaho Content Standards for Mathematics and data science. It will also provide teaching strategies and resources.
Course Description
This professional development course for in-service educators and administrators will focus on building awareness of how data is used in Idaho industries for high school mathematics educators. It will help them define data science and show connections between the Idaho Content Standards for Mathematics and data science. It will also provide teaching strategies and resources.
Course Objectives
- Build knowledge about how data is used in Idaho industries and discuss ways that data may be used in high school math courses.
- Explore “Data Science” and what a high school Data Science course may look like.
- Identify connections between potential Data Science course content and the Idaho Content Standards for Mathematics.
- Share and identify sources of rich, deep high school Data Science resources, both content and instructional methods.
Course Meeting Dates
This course will meet synchronously via Zoom 4 times in April – May 2022 as well as one full in-person regional meeting in mid-June. Prior to each meeting (with exception to the Kickoff session), readings and other assignments will be given as preparation via Canvas. After each meeting, an evaluation survey will be administered.

The course will teach the developmental trajectory of geometric understanding and strategies for differentiation. It will also discuss successful practices for providing intervention for students who struggle to understand Geometry content. Hybrid Schedule with 4 Virtual.
