Institutional Biosafety Committee(IBC)
The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) reviews all proposed research protocols involving biohazardous materials including pathogens and rDNA.
A Principal Investigator (PI) intending to work with biohazardous material must have their protocol approved by the IBC prior to conducting the relevant research.

A PI intending to work with a biohazardous material must complete the following steps to have a research protocol approved by the IBC.
- Complete and submit a Biosafety Protocol Registration Form, including a biohazardous material specific attachment, to the IBC at biosafe@isu.edu.
- Coordinate a laboratory inspection with the ISU Biosafety Officer to ensure the proposed lab area is appropriate for work with biohazardous materials.
- Complete a lab specific Biosafety Manual utilizing the biosafety manual template and submit it to the IBC.
The IBC will review the form submissions, comments from the lab inspection, and the completed biosafety manual to determine if additional information or modifications are required.
The PI will receive written notification from the IBC when all requirements are met and the protocol is approved by the IBC.
Researchers working on a project requiring IBC approval are required to take biosafety training via ISU's online training system, CITI Training.
All researchers working on a project requiring IBC approval must take one of the two following courses.
Group 1- Handling Biohazards (researchers handling handling biohazardous material)
Group 9 - Biosafety Overview (researchers NOT handling biohazardous materials)
Additional courses are required as determined by the type of biohazard and the researcher's applicable work activity. Once in the CITI training system, go to Question 8 to find the other potentially applicable training courses.
Completed registration forms must be submitted to biosafe@isu.edu before the submission deadline listed on the meeting schedule to be considered at the next IBC meeting. Consideration deadlines are the first Tuesday of the month for the meeting on the third Tuesday of the month.
