NIMH Outreach Partnership Program Description

The Institute of Rural Health at Idaho State University (ISU) is the Idaho Partner in the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Outreach Partnership Program. As a member of the Outreach Partnership Program, the Institute of Rural Health participates with other an tional and state organizations to strengthen the impact of public health research by disseminating the latest scientific findings; informing the public about mental illnesses; and reducing stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness. The program also provides National Institute of Mental Health with the opportunity to engage community organizations in a dialogue to help develop a national research agenda to improve America’s mental health.

 

CDC Oral Health

The Idaho Oral Health Program contracted with the Idaho State University Master of Public Health Program to develop and conduct an Oral Health Environmental Assessment and Partnership/Collaboration Evaluation. The Institute of Rural Health is part of this collaboration. The results of the assessment and evaluation will be utilized to help identify oral health policy priorities and interventions to achieve improved oral health outcomes. The results have also shaped the development of the 2015-2020 Idaho Oral Health Action Plan. A second environmental assessment will occur in 2017.

 

Cooperative Telehealth Network

To deliver educational and clinical services to rural areas using state-of-the-art telenetworking technologies.

 

 IRH partners with IDHW for study on Primary Care Providers

The Idaho State University Institute of Rural Health is partnering with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (IDHW) to conduct a baseline study on primary care providers’ use of team-based care, referral patterns, and electronic health records (EHR) for patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Other partnering organizations include the Idaho Medical Association, the Idaho Academy of Family Physicians, the Idaho Primary Care Association, and St. Luke’s Health System.

 

IRH partners with IDHW for study to Prevent and Control Oral Disease

This is a contract to design an online oral health surveillance system with core data measures and an expanded system with additional data measures. This is done through conducting in-depth interviews and surveys with stakeholders to identify background information prior to outlining and designing the online surveillance system (barriers, facilitators, data sources, reporting needs, etc.). This evaluation is part of the state’s five (5) year oral health evaluation plan.

 

Idaho Community HealthCorps

AmeriCorps service program that places members throughout Idaho to support community based, culturally appropriate, and rurally adapted health activities.

 

Idaho Commission on Aging

The Institute of Rural Health at Idaho State University has been contracted by the Idaho Commission on Aging to assess the Older Americans Act and State Senior Services Act needs in Idaho. These needs will be assessed using a survey developed by the Institute of Rural Health. The overall goal of this project is to evaluate the needs of older adults in Idaho. The assessment results will help the commission fund necessary services to the six local Area Agencies on Aging.

A 3D interactive virtual environment for collaborative immersive learning experiences for the healthcare, emergency preparedness, and educational services industries.

 

Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) - The Economic Burden of Injuries to Alaska Natives: Implications for Prevention and Health Policy

To measure the economic burden of injury in Alaska Native communities and estimate the relative cost-effectiveness of injury prevention interventions.

Examines the positive and negative aspects of providing care for people who have experienced suffering or trauma. The AAYSP project incorporates this Professional Quality of Life research, found at proqol.org.

 

Awareness to Action Youth Suicide Prevention Project (AAYSP)

To create an infrastructure for reducing suicide attempts/completions among Idaho youth ages 10-24 through trainings and partnering with other suicide prevention groups.

 

Better Todays. Better Tomorrows.

This school- and community-based program seeks to reduce suicide in school-age children through gatekeeper trainings on the signs and symptoms of mental disorders and trauma.

 

Compassion Satisfaction and Compassion Fatigue Research (ProQOL)

Feasibility Study for Shoshone-Bannock Tribes Elder Care

The primary purpose of this project was to determine if the establishment of an Elder Long-Term Health Care Facility for the Shoshone-Bannock Community would yield a cost effective solution for the elderly population. Preferences of Tribal elders were reviewed and a representative sample were interviewed to gain insight into assisted living preferences and experience with the current system of health care. This included a cost-effectiveness analysis of an Elder Long-Term Health Care Facility of space and service requirements, estimated construction costs and operations costs over the period of the facility’s life cycle.

To address hospital discharge planning in rural and underserved areas and increase statewide resources for both consumers and professionals.

To improve the health of rural Idahoans and populations and to assist members in providing leadership on rural issues.

To increase the well-being of and improve permanency outcomes for children affected by a parent’s or caretaker’s substance abuse.

 

Rocky Mountain Learning

To provide quality distance education to a national audience using 3D virtual worlds, webinars, and videoconferencing.

 

Idaho Suicide Prevention Hotline

The Idaho Suicide Prevention Hotline Project is a 1-year collaborative research project to prepare a report identifying how a suicide crisis phone line could be established and maintained.

 

 Alcohol ERT and Cognition in Menopausal Women

To see if moderate drinking, physical health, and emotional health affect how menopausal women perform on tests of learning, memory, and other thinking abilities.

 

Supporting Pandemic-flu Preparedness Training Exercises in the Play2Train™ Virtual Environment

To support the VA San Diego’s ability to conduct realistic drills for pandemic flu outbreaks in a virtual town with 3 hospitals.

 

Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students

Federal program to help full-time students in eligible programs who are considered economically and/or environmentally disadvantaged.

 

Idaho Bioterrorism Awareness and Preparedness Program

Bringing state-of-the-art training on emergency management of natural or man-made disasters directly to healthcare professionals via innovative distance learning, simulation laboratory, and virtual reality training methods.

 

National Child Traumatic Stress Network – Center for Rural, Frontier and Tribal Traumatic Stress

To assist rural, frontier, and tribal communities in the treatment of child traumatic stress through technology-augmented resources.

 

Real Choices Project

To improve community integration for people with disabilities (developmental, physical, mental, and age-related) through anti-stigma, economic analysis, and effectiveness studies.
