Student Resources

College is an exciting time for students. Opportunities for new experiences, advanced learning, and lots of personal growth are all part of the package. Sometimes these opportunities challenge students in new and trying ways. These are the times when we want students to reach out to the Dean of Students Office for help. We can connect you with helpful campus resources, guide you through university processes and procedures, support you during difficult situations, and provide a safe place to ask any question you might have. While we expect students to take the lead in their educational experience, we want to help you build those essential skills that will help you to be successful.

Additional Important Information

When you apply to Idaho State University you will be asked to disclose your criminal history. Prospective students who do not answer the question honestly may have their admission status re-evaluated. The most common ways in which a conviction may impact an admitted student are as follows:

  • Employment- Many student employee positions will require a background check to be completed prior to an official offer of employment is made. Depending on the specifics of your conviction, you may or may not be eligible for the job. Most job postings will note if a background check is a requirement of the position. Students who apply for employment at ISU as a state employee are required to have a background check. Additional information can be found in the Background Investigations Policy, ISUPP #3170.
  • Academic Programs- There are some academic programs that require background checks for participation in clinical/field experiences, internships, study abroad, certification status, etc. This is especially common in health programs and those who may work with vulnerable populations (minors, elderly, those with impaired decision making capability, animals, etc.). Students should research requirements of their intended program to determine if they will be impacted.
  • Housing- University Housing may have specific restrictions or policies about convicted felons and/or registered sex offenders living in any of their properties. Due to the concentrated number of people living in an on-campus facility, the potential presence of minors, and overall accessibility to spaces and property, the standards for eligibility for living in our properties are high.
  • Code of Conduct- Students who have felony charges and/or convictions after they are admitted to ISU as a student, have an obligation to disclose to the University their status. Depending on the type of charges, there may or may not be implications to your student status. ISU reserves the right to bring students through the Conduct Hearing Process based on legal charges, more information can found the Student Code of Conduct, ISUPP #5000.

In some instances, ISU may require students in parole or probation status to submit a reference from a parole or probation officer or other Department of Corrections official (to be determined by the university). Students may also be  required to have an in-person interview with university officials such as Dean of Students Office, Director of Public Safety, Campus Legal Counsel, and others. Any final decisions regarding a student's status or university restrictions due to a criminal history will be directed to the student in writing at the conclusion of the investigative process.
