Nursing Home Case Study

Problem: “Frank” has short term memory problems from early dementia. He is
convalescing in the nursing home after hip replacement surgery. Because of his surgery,
he has strict orders to be on complete bed rest and is not allowed out of bed for any
reason. During the night, he becomes disoriented and tries to climb out of bed, but staff
were made aware and were able to make sure he did not fall. He has fallen from his
bed or wheelchair several times recently. The facility told Frank's family that he is "non-
compliant" and the staff say they keep telling him not to get out of bed, but he doesn't
listen.
