Spring Cleaning: College Edition
By Estee Williams
Spring into Cleaning!
You might be asking, “Spring cleaning? Isn’t it summer break?” Well, if you’ve been to Idaho, you’ll know that winter is hanging on tight! Just this week we’ve had 3 days of snow. With this kind of weather, you’d rather sit down with a nice warm drink, cover up in a soft blanket, and watch your favorite show. But, rumor has it that we may be experiencing some spring-like weather in the next couple of weeks, which means it's the perfect time to refresh and reorganize!
Select what you will “spring clean”
As a college student, you might have a few spaces that could use a little “sprucing up” - your dorm/apartment, your room at your parent’s house, your car, your closet, your backpack, or even your phone! Yep, deleting old photos and text messages, cleaning out your email, and clearing out old apps could also help reset and reorganize.
Set aside some time After you decide what you’d like to work on, it's a good idea to plan some time to accomplish your goals. This process can take a lot longer than expected, and there will undoubtedly be a time where you’re sitting on the floor wearing your old Halloween costume while looking through old memories and photos. So, you might set aside an evening or even a whole weekend!
Needed supplies

If you are on a budget, these items are all available at your local dollar store!
Enjoy the process
Before you begin, grab your favorite drink and turn on some good music, a podcast, or your favorite audiobook! This should make the process more fun and will help you to stay motivated.
Clean it out and reorganize
Before you can really get down to the cleaning, things need to be cleared out and sorted through. You might go through some of your clothes, things under your bed, through your drawers, things in your backpack, and stuff that's been left in your car. Start some piles to sort things into a keep pile, a throw away pile, and a donate pile. This process might be overwhelming, but the important thing to remember is that it gets worse before it gets better.
Pro Tip: Get a binder and some folders for important documents. Whether its tax information, an important school document, or important mail, keep all of that in a binder that you can keep in a safe place. This will help keep you organized and confident that you can find everything right when you need it.

Clean, clean, clean
Sweep, vacuum, dust, mop, scrub, wipe, etc. etc. etc. Some spots that are easy to forget might include your ceiling fans, your baseboards, windows, shower curtain, your refrigerator, or your microwave. After you’ve done all of the cleaning tasks in your space, tidy everything up and finish it off with your favorite scent. You might use a candle, a wall plug, or for your car - a car freshener! This is the finishing touch to a nice clean space. Good job, you’re almost done!
Something new
This next part is fun, and optional. Go to the store and buy something for your space that can help maintain your new and clean space! It could be something small like a room spray, a new calendar to keep yourself organized, a vase of fresh flowers, or anything that will help you to feel refreshed and reenergized in your space.
A popular room spray made with essential oils, is Mrs. Meyer's Room Freshener. It comes in all different scents.
Personalize your space with these cute calendars. You can find some great calendars at Walmart or
Fred Meyer.
Another product that might come in useful is drawer organizers! They come in all shapes and sizes. and allow for your space to stay nice and situated.
The last step is to sit back, kick your feet up, relax, and enjoy! You can feel good knowing that your space is clean and organized and can help you refresh as we head into the nice summer months.
