Teresa Molina was in her undergraduate studies when she ran into some obstacles. “By the time I came back to school I was really frustrated and worried about coming back, or even if I should come back,” she says.
Teresa’s mom, Lillian Molina, encouraged her daughter to go back to school. And then, when Lillian’s husband passed away, it was Teresa’s turn to encourage her mother. Lillian decided to go back to school, also enrolling as a University Studies major, and has proven that it’s never too late to go to college.
Both women have found success in the breadth and flexibility of the program. “I came into University Studies because that particular major seemed more well rounded,” Lillian says.” She has focused some of her studies on social work and psychology classes to help her better serve the veterans she works with. Teresa, who also works with veterans, has found that the medical classes she’s taken have enabled her to provide more resources to the veterans she serves.
Their experience with a University Studies education is similar to what many people are discovering. Employers want diverse, broad-thinking individuals. “I was leery about being in general studies because it’s so wide-range,” Teresa says, “but I’ve found that employers are really positive about it. Your learning can blend into other areas. Not being so specific is one thing that I thought was going to hurt me, but actually helped me.”
“I tell everyone about the program and that there’s a lot of support,” Teresa says. “If someone’s undecided it can help guide them to possibly make a decision. I feel like this place is right for me and a lot of people feel the same way.”
