McNair Student Highlights
Abraham Ruvalcaba
Abraham is a Psychology major from Chicago. He has lived all over the US, he also has spent time in Camp Hovey, Korea. During the last year at ISU Abraham has done research on how developmental disabilities diagnosis influence recidivism among juvenile offenders in correctional facilities, under direction of Dr. Deirdre Caputo-Levine (Assistant Professor of Sociology and Social Work). He also spoke on a panel during Hispanic Heritage Month. Outside of research and academics, . Abraham loves to stay active whether that’s working out, swimming, hiking, snowboarding, fishing, or running. He also enjoys cooking. Abraham has a plethora of pets.
Chelsea Blanchard
Chelsea is a Communications major with a focus on the representation of Deaf individuals in media. In January, she presented her research at the Southern Political Science Association Annual Meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her work explores political engagement through both social and parasocial representations, specifically investigating whether the media portrayal of Deaf people fosters positive political engagement related to Deaf issues. Outside of her research, Chelsea enjoys indulging in jelly beans and chocolate, dancing, constructing miniatures, and spending time with her four dogs: Koa, Mishka, Vlani, and Sadie.
Ahtziry “Chachi” Granados Gonzalez
Ahtziry “Chachi” Granados Gonzalez, a senior majoring in psychology with a minor in Spanish, has made significant strides in her academic journey since joining the McNair Scholars Program. In just over a year, she has published a journal article, participated in academic events like the McNair Symposium, and now she is preparing to present her research at the Western Regional Honors Council Conference in Denver, Colorado, where she will share her findings with scholars from across the country.
Her research utilizes photo-voice—a method combining photography and conversation—to explore what helps or hinders honors students' sense of belonging within their institutions. By highlighting these factors, she hopes to contribute to a better understanding of student experiences, particularly for underrepresented or marginalized groups. Though her research is not yet published, she aspires to see it in print so institutions like Idaho State University can benefit from its insights.
Through the McNair Scholars Program, she has gained not only research experience but also confidence in her abilities as a student and future graduate scholar. More than just an academic opportunity, the program has reinforced her own sense of belonging—reflecting the very subject of her research and shaping the path ahead.
Makenzie Kohler
Makenzie holds a Bachelor of Science with honors distinction in Biology with a concentration in Biomedical Science from Idaho State University (ISU) and a Master of Science in Science and Technology Journalism from Texas A&M University. Science and Technology Journalism involves translating complex, technical research into language that the general public can understand. In the next 10 years, she plans to pursue a doctorate in education.
One of Makenzie's greatest accomplishments after graduating from the McNair Scholars Program was gaining acceptance into her graduate program. With only five science journalism programs in the country, she was fortunate to be one of four students accepted into her program in 2021. During graduate school, she had the incredible opportunity to intern in science communication at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard in 2023. There, she engaged with scientists conducting groundbreaking research and even met one of the pioneers credited with discovering CRISPR gene-editing technology—an unforgettable experience for any biology enthusiast.
Professionally, Makenzie advanced quickly in her career, moving from her first post-college job to assistant director of TRIO Educational Talent Search (ETS) in less than a year. She returned to work for ETS because of the strong sense of community she found within ISU's TRIO department. TRIO shaped her final two years of college, making it a home away from home. Denise Tambasco, the former McNair director, played a significant role in her journey—she not only recommended her for the advisor position with ETS but also provided unwavering support as she navigated graduate school. Inspired by that encouragement, Makenzie strives to be that same source of support for her students. Her passion for science accessibility and education motivated her to pursue a master’s in science communication, and it continues to drive her work today.
Working for TRIO has given Makenzie the opportunity to grow professionally while also helping students in ways she wished she had been supported in high school. At 17, after being accepted to ISU, she had no idea what to do next. One summer day, she drove to campus with a friend, wandering aimlessly, trying to figure out how to register for classes and choose a major. That’s when Bianica Yellowhair from Bengal Bridge noticed her, invited her into her office, and helped her navigate the process—explaining, to her surprise, that pre-med was not a major! With guidance, she selected biomedical science and registered for courses, a moment that truly changed her life. Years later, when Makenzie started working for TRIO, she had a full-circle moment when she saw Bianica again and shared how much that small act of kindness had meant to her.
Beyond academics and her career, she is also proud of completing her first half marathon in 2023 and traveling to places she once thought were out of reach. Now, Makenzie strives to be that person for her students. She wants them to feel supported, empowered, and confident in their futures, knowing they have someone who believes in them every step of the way.
Fatima Castro
Fatima Castro graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, minoring in Latino Studies and Spanish from Idaho State University. Her journey with the McNair program began when she expressed interest in graduate school to her advisor, Maurice. Since then, her goal has been to pursue a Master's in counseling. She joined the McNair program during her sophomore year and participated in two Summer Research Programs. In her first summer, she worked with mentors from the Political Science department, while in the following year, she collaborated with a mentor from the Psychology department. These experiences were incredibly rewarding, offering valuable insights into graduate school and research.
Her favorite part was meeting her cohort because she formed meaningful connections with fellow students. While the program and courses were time-consuming, the knowledge and experience gained were invaluable. Prospective students should be aware of the commitment required, but the program teaches essential skills for graduate school. Fatima encourages others to embrace the opportunity to ask questions and build a relationship with their mentor. She also notes that research may not be everyone's passion, and that is perfectly okay. She hopes this program helps students explore their interests and preferences in graduate school and research.
Fatima now works for TRIO Educational Talent Search at Idaho State University and is helping high school students learn about and forge ahead into higher education.
