Carey Jennings, one of our outstanding financial aid counselors is apparently also outstanding at throwing things!
Horseshoes, to be exact.
But I learned something while exploring the NHPA World Tournament. It’s not called “throwing”; it’s called pitching.
Carey will be competing at the 2021 NHPA World Horseshoe Tournament, which is being hosted this year in Winnemucca, Nevada, July 19-31. But Carey isn’t just a competitor. She is also the president of the Gate City Horseshoe Pitchers Association and the first Vice President of the Idaho Horseshoe Pitchers Association, roles into which she says she was “thrown” (yes, we’re back to that word!) because she recruited the most people to join our Idaho state league last year.
But Carey is being modest. When she first started pitching horseshoes in 2010, she said that she could barely throw the horseshoe into the pit. Since that time, Carey has not missed a season in the city or state leagues and now pitches in both leagues. Her team has taken first a few times, and Carey pitched the most doubles for a female in 2016, coming close to that mark in several more seasons. She currently has an average of 28% in the City Bar League and 35% in the State League, which means she nails 28-35 ringers out of every hundred.
The NHPA World Tournament is held in a different city each year. Pocatello hosted the event at our very own Holt Arena in 2004, and Carey would like to see it return to Pocatello in 2024. Forty-three Idaho competitors are heading to this year’s competition in Nevada, 25 of them representing Pocatello.
Check out the NHPA World Tournament, and let’s wish Carey good luck!
