Subash Pandey | M.A. in Sociology | May 2021
Subash Pandey first joined Idaho State University (ISU) as a graduate student, intending to collaborate with his supervisor, Dr. Katrina Running, professor of sociology, on her research project for his thesis. However, Dr. Running encouraged him to redirect his attention to his home country of Nepal, emphasizing the wealth of research opportunities in the United States compared to the scarcity of knowledge in areas such as Nepal.
Encouraged by this perspective, Pandey drafted a research grant proposal with the help of Running, and successfully secured funding to investigate the effectiveness of local climate policies in Nepal.
Pandey says, “This experience profoundly influenced my career choices, steering me towards working with underserved communities in Nepal and other countries in the Global South.”
Following his graduation from ISU, Subash completed the Climate Science and Policy Program at Bard College in New York. His commitment to environmental advocacy and social equity caught the attention of Emergent, an international organization dedicated to mitigating climate change. In his position within the organization, he continues to champion climate initiatives on a global scale. Subash’s recent op-eds in The Kathmandu Post, one of Nepal's leading English-language newspapers, include pieces like "Climate finance dilemma" and "Blaming it all on climate change.”
“Subash is a kind, humble, and very intelligent human being,” says Running. “I can't wait to see where his knowledge of environmental challenges and commitment to human equity and well-being take him!”
