To celebrate National Nutrition Month, Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) from the Pocatello Dietitians group collaborated with ISU dietetic students and interns to celebrate ‘all things nutrition.'

The Nutrition Fair was a family event featuring activities and information for the Pocatello community. WIC, University of Idaho Extension, Citrus Pear, and Southeastern Idaho Public Health, and other local organizations taught participants about their nutrition-related programs and services. The fair was attended by approximately 200 community members of all ages, and a 'Fueling and Fitness' area was a Fair favorite!

Sports dietitian, Natalie Christensen works with students and dietetic interns at Nutrition Fair 2019 SCORE booth

SCORE sports dietitian, Natalie Christensen, RDN, LD, CSSD, teamed up with personal trainer and future RDN, Tyrel Bechstein, for the ‘Fueling and Fitness’ area.

This duo taught participants how to exercise safely based on their fitness level and how to fuel their bodies before and after exercise. Participants tested their fitness skills, engage in friendly athletic competitions, and learned about nutrition for exercise at a Refueling Station, where Natalie demonstrated how to make green smoothies.

Many participants of the Fueling and Fitness area said they learned so much from Natalie about what to eat. Two participants, a high school student athlete and her mom, spent about 30 minutes with Natalie and said afterward they were so glad they had the chance to ask a real sports dietitian about nutrition for exercise.

“ The Fueling and Fitness area was my favorite part of the Nutrition Fair.
I learned MUCH about how to eat before exercise. Thank you for all your time! ”  ~2019 Nutrition Fair participant

The Nutrition Fair was featured by a local news station, which was highlighted nationally by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  Pocatello City Council member Jim Johnston also presented a Proclamation to recognize March as National Nutrition Month in the City of Pocatello. Students who participated in the fair also received national recognition from Phi Upsilon Omicron national honor society for their participation in the Nutrition Fair.
