Nourishing the ISU Community Through Benny’s Pantry
March 2022

MS in Nutrition Dietetic Internship Student, Idaho State University
When was the last time you skipped a meal because you were too busy, or you didn't have enough money, or you didn't have a car to go get food? Having food available to us at any given time makes us not only feel full and satisfied, but also feeling connected to community and belonging.
Poverty is often a barrier for students who are striving to obtain a certification or degree in higher education. Critical thinking requires energy, and food provides energy. When hunger strikes, it affects a student’s ability to focus. At Benny’s Pantry, we believe that alleviating food insecurity should empower our ISU community to focus on learning and discovery, thereby removing a significant barrier to persistence
I have known about Benny’s pantry for quite some time but didn’t ever think I was qualified because of my income status. While attending my dietetic internship rotation, I was able to stop by Benny's Pantry and take a look around to see what they carry and what options they have for a complete meal. I was able to make breaded pork chops, roasted garlic potatoes and green beans for dinner. I had enough leftovers for the next couple meals.
The Pantry also carries all sorts of canned vegetables, beans, dried noodles, top ramen, peanut butter, canned tuna, cheese, frozen meat, toiletries, diapers, and essential needs!
All ISU students, staff and faculty are eligible to access Benny’s Pantry. At your first visit, participants must sign the Acceptance of Free Food Waiver. Participants must bring a valid Bengal ID card or know their student ID number.
Benny’s Pantry can be accessed twice a month and food and personal care items are distributed based on household size.
