Convection Chimney
PIRA 4B20.25
The apparatus, pictured at left, consists of a glass tube with a rubber stopper at one end, together with a piece of tin that just fits inside the tube. A candle is placed on the stopper, held in place with a glob of clay. When the tin is inserted into the tube, and the tube placed over the burning candle, the candle continues to burn, as at the left. When setting this up, note that the height of the divider over the candle is important. The air flowing past the flame can extinguish the candle, and it must be adjusted before class accordingly.
When the tin is removed, the candle is extinguished, as at the right.
