Allow a slinky to dangle vertically from your hand without it touching the ground. Release the top end of the slinky,the bottom will not move until the top has reached it due to the tension forces acting against the force of gravity. This works best when standing on a desk or chair so that the bottom of the slinky is at eye height for students.
