Eddy Current Tubes
PIRA: 5K20.25
A table clamp is used to attach the copper to a sturdy table or countertop. An aluminum slug will drop right through the tube without any interaction. However, a strong neodymium magnet will fall much more slowly when dropped into the same pipe. This is a strong demonstration for discussions of Lenz's Law and electromagnetic induction. If there is any metal near the bottom of the tube, such as metal table legs, a cup or something similar should be positioned to catch the magnet and prevent it from smacking into such metal objects.
