ISU to host service learning forum on Sept. 27
September 20, 2018
POCATELLO – Idaho State University will host a forum on service learning across disciplines on Sept. 27 from 4 to 7 p.m., in the Pond Student Union Wood and Little Wood River Rooms.
Service learning is an increasingly popular secondary- and university-level teaching pedagogy that connects classroom teaching with community service.
The forum will feature several events to encourage participants to develop and refine service learning in their own courses.
School and university teachers, secondary and university-level teachers-in-training and interested members of the public are welcome to attend any or all of the following events.
The first event is a workshop from 4 to 5:30 p.m. that will feature ISU professors speaking about course-based service learning projects and resource tables with information about co-curricular service learning initiatives.
The second event is a keynote talk titled "Service Learning: Why the Humanities and Everyone Else Needs It Now” from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The keynote speaker is Roberta Rosenberg, long-time service learning advocate and professor emerita of English from Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. She is also coeditor of “Service Learning and Literary Studies in English,” which won the 2017 Teaching Literature Book Award, a national book prize given biennially by ISU's Department of English and Philosophy.
The keynote talk will be followed by a reception from 7 to 8 p.m.
The event is cosponsored by the Idaho Humanities Council, the ISU Department of English and Philosophy, Department of History, College of Education, Student Opportunity Development Office and the Office of Student Orientation and Leadership.
