Idaho State University’s Southeast Idaho Area Health Education Center welcomes 15 to brand new cohort of medical professional training
November 15, 2018
POCATELLO – The Southeast Idaho branch of Area Health Education Center (AHEC) will welcome a full class of health care student scholars in an orientation kick-off celebration this Friday, Nov. 16.
The ISU Alumni House, located at 554 S. 7th Avenue in Pocatello, will play host to the event, which runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
During the orientation and welcome event, the 15 AHEC scholars, who come from all avenues of existing medical education and practice, will receive their first assignments. Diana Schow, interim director for the Southeast Idaho AHEC, will welcome the group. An introduction to their courses and outline of the program will be given by Rex Force, vice president for Health Sciences at ISU. Remarks from Elizabeth Fore, interim director of the Idaho Health, will round out the program.
The AHEC scholars program is designed to enhance the training and clinical experiences of students already enrolled in health professions courses at ISU. The scholars will take online or in-person courses that focus on six leading-edge healthcare topics during their two-year stint.
These courses and training will be centered around two key issues: interprofessional health care, and improved access to health care for rural and underserved communities. This curriculum is specifically designed to address some of the critical needs for Idaho residents in terms of professional medical collaboration and physician shortages. Through grant funds, these additional courses are offered for no charge to the students, and a small stipend is also offered. The students will connect with a multitude of health professionals in and outside of their designated field, which will better prepare them to care for patients.
