Idaho State University classes cancelled Aug. 21
June 2, 2017
POCATELLO – Idaho State University has announced that classes will be cancelled the first official day of classes, Monday, Aug. 21, due to the hundreds of thousands of visitors that are expected to converge on Southeast Idaho to observe the total eclipse of the sun.
In planning ahead of this rare and historic event, classes will be cancelled on all four campuses of Idaho State University on Aug. 21. Classes will start on Tuesday, Aug. 22.
Additionally, the ISU-Idaho Falls campus will be closed to non-essential personnel. The closure is due to the probability of large crowds of people viewing the eclipse at Freeman Park, which is immediately adjacent to University Place. The closure in Idaho Falls to employees is mandatory except in special situations that will require approval from a supervisor.
In Pocatello, ISU is planning events and activities on Aug. 21 for students; however, the traditional Welcome Back Orange and Black event has been moved to Monday, Aug. 28.
An ISU committee has been organized to evaluate the potential impact to University operations, and additional information and updates will be provided to faculty, staff and students in the coming weeks.
State and local emergency personnel have advised ISU that the large number of eclipse visitors may have an impact on travel, internet connectivity, cellular phone service and supplies at grocery stores and gas stations, so please plan accordingly. With this information in mind, ISU preemptively elected to cancel all ISU classes and closed its Idaho Falls campus to non-essential personnel.
