College of Education's Celebrating Excellence Event Set For Nov. 4

The College of Education will hold its fifth annual Celebrating Excellence event on Saturday, November 4, 2017 from 10 a.m. to noon in the College of Education (COE) Lobby on the ISU Pocatello campus.  Six individuals have been nominated and selected to receive awards based on their significant contributions in education and their respective fields. 

Luke Nelson has been selected as the recipient of the Distinguished Leader Award.  Luke completed two degrees at Idaho State University, including an undergraduate degree with a double major in Outdoor Education and Spanish as well as a Masters in Physician Assistant Studies.  Luke is a native of Southeast Idaho and works very hard in his many roles as a Physician Assistant, an advocate and former president of the Idaho Condor Humanitarian Services organization, and as a Ski Patroller and member of the Snow Safety and Avalanche Reduction team at Pebble Creek Ski Area.  Luke is also an accomplished professional endurance athlete and competes at the international level in ultra endurance mountain running and ski mountaineering. 

Britnie Hodgson is this year’s recipient of the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award.  Britnie completed her Bachelor of Science in Exercise & Sport Science with a minor in Business and Entrepreneurship at Oregon State University.  During that time, she was also a member and a captain of the Women’s Rowing Team at OSU.  Britnie attended ISU for her graduate work and completed a Master of Physical Education in Athletic Administration in 2012 and a Master of Science in Athletic Training in 2015.  She became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach in 2013 and has completed many prestigious internships.  Britnie currently works as an Athletic Trainer for the University of Oregon in their Athletic Medicine Department and also serves on the NATA Honors and Awards Committee. 

The Distinguished Bengal Partner Award will be given to Dr. Anthony Joseph.  Dr. Joseph is a double board certified Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician who has lived and practiced in Pocatello for 24 years.  Dr. Joseph graduated from Northern Arizona University, St. Louis University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at Arizona’s Scottsdale Memorial and his fellowship at Hennepin County Minneapolis.  Dr. Joseph has served ISU and the Pocatello community in many ways, including: caring for countless ISU students at the Student Health Center, serving as a mentor for numerous students who have shadowed him in his private practice, working on the sidelines of many School District 25 athletic games, and he currently serves as the Director of Sports Medicine for Portneuf Medical Center.  In addition to his outstanding record of service, Dr. Joseph also serves as the Medical Director and as a member of the Advisory Board for the Master of Science in Athletic Training Program at ISU. 

Jamie Webster will be awarded the Staff Excellence Award.  Jamie has served as the Student Advising Coordinator for the College of Education since 2013.  She has worked as an advisor for undergraduate students for more than 15 years and is a member of several professional organizations including Kappa Delta Pi, the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), and the National Association for Alternative Certification (NAAC).  Jamie has served the COE in a number of ways, including: working on the NCATE accreditation in 2015, design and implementation of the Master of Arts in Teaching program, co-creation of the ATLAS Center to provide a one-stop-shop for students from recruitment to filed placement and graduation, assisting with Future Educator’s Day for high school students, and solidifying the recruitment and retention efforts in the COE.  Jamie earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Religious Studies from Arizona State University, a Master in Business Administration, and a Master in Education from the University of Phoenix.
