Performance Poet Darren Edwards Sets Show April 21
Performance poet Darren Edwards will be coming to ISU on April 21to give a performance and lead a workshop on composing and performing slam poetry. The event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Education Building Auditorium: performance 5:00PM-6:00PM. Workshop 6:00-7:30PM.
Slam poetry has, since the 1990s, created new interest in poetry and the possibilities of performing poetry. It has been particularly popular with youth and disaffected groups, who frequently choose social justice-related subject matter. The poems are meant to be performed; the author/performer's gestures, intonation, rhythm, cadence, and expression are all important aspects of the work. Competitive "slam" events have been created to capitalize on audience response and participation.
The event is co-sponsored by the Cultural Events Committee, the College of Education, and the ISU Department of English.
