POCATELLO—This year marks the 10-year anniversary for the Chrome in the Dome car show put on by the Idaho State University College of Technology March 18 from 2 to 9 p.m. and March 19 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Holt Arena.
The family-friendly event features more than 135 car and trucks on display and about 25 motorcycles. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
The show is a fundraising effort for “SKILLS USA – Automotive,” a student organization in the ISU College of Technology. Proceeds of the show enable students to attend state and national conferences.
Admission is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and under.
In honor of the 10-year anniversary, Charley Hutton, a world-renowned automotive painter and fabricator, will attend Chrome in the Dome along with Ed “The Outlaw” Jones, a nationally known drag racer from Malad. They will be available for autographs and pictures with all car show attendees.
“We are really excited to have Charley Hutton and Ed ‘The Outlaw’ Jones with us this year,” said Russ Butler, coordinator and instructor of auto collision repair and refinishing. “Ed is helping us celebrate our 10-year anniversary and we are helping celebrate his 40-year (racing) anniversary.”
Hutton was born and raised in Caldwell. He served as Boyd Coddington's shop supervisor on Discovery Channel's “American Hot Rod.” Hutton has worked at many premier shops in the industry: Foose Design, Rad Rides by Troy, The Roadster Shop, Greening Auto Company, Miranda Built, Customs & Hot Rods of Andice and CAL Automotive Creations. He was part of the restoration team for the 2013 Ridler winner, the 1940 Ford "Checkered Past,” and the 1967 Miranda Nova. Recipient of the 2014 Detroit AutoRama Ridler Great 8 and 2014 Good Guys Street Machine of the Year. His driving force behind his work is helping make peoples' car dreams become a reality.
Jones is celebrating his 40-year drag racing anniversary this year. He has toured all across America and internationally. Jones roars down the dragstrip in either his stage coach or his fire truck at speeds of more than 100 miles an hour on two wheels, and he is one of about 11 wheel-standers licensed by the National Hot Rod Association in America to run on NHRA approved strips. He was featured on the international television show "Spectacular World of Guinness Records,” as he set the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest wheel-stand on a dragstrip, a record he still holds. Jones is sponsored by the Jelly Belly Candy Company.
“Wendy and I have traveled around with the car for 40 years and we get to celebrate these 40 years in our hometown,” Jones said. “The college does so much for the community that we are we are looking forward to being a part of that.”
