Idaho State University School of Performing Arts Presents “The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical”
March 20, 2025

The Idaho State University School of Performing Arts invites the community to join us for an exhilarating production of “The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical," running April 11, 12, 17, and 18 at 7:30 p.m., with a special matinee on April 19 at 2 p.m.
Based on the beloved book by Rick Riordan, this energetic rock musical brings to life the adventures of Percy Jackson, a modern demigod who discovers his true identity amidst epic quests and mythological dangers. Directed by guest artist from Weber State University, Francesca Mintowt-Czyz, with musical direction by ISU’s own Diana Livingston Friedley, this production promises to captivate audiences with its unique blend of dynamic storytelling, physical theater, and a vibrant score.
“My vision for ‘The Lightning Thief’ centers on the raw, kinetic energy of Percy’s journey,” Mintowt-Czyz shared. “We enter a world where myth meets modernity and the line between fantasy and reality blurs. The show pulses with adolescent urgency, and I plan to bring that to life through a fusion of physical theatre and a gritty rock aesthetic.”
Audiences can expect to experience key themes of identity, belonging, and the courage to embrace one’s flaws as they follow Percy’s path of self-discovery and friendships. “Percy’s struggle to find his place while battling self-doubt is deeply human,” Mintowt-Czyz remarked. “These ideas will be reinforced through tight ensemble work, where even the fantastical elements feel rooted in emotional truth.”
Alongside Mintowt-Czyz, Musical Director Dr. Diana Livingston Friedley is excited to explore the musical elements that reflect the characters' journeys. “‘The Lightning Thief’ is a rock musical; there are several moments where the storyline is calm, which is reflected in the music by slower music. We're making intentional choices when it comes to tempi. Other-worldly noises will also be incorporated into our sound-scape for the show.” she explained. “‘Good Kid’ is a song that I think will resonate with many kids in the audience and our Percys (we've double cast) are delivering this song with touching sincerity. ‘The Campfire Song’ is an honest and hilarious expression of what many teenagers experience in ‘dealing’ with their parents.”
Join us for the Afterglow on opening night, April 11, where audience members can mingle with the cast crew and musicians while enjoying refreshments available for purchase. Experience an intimate moment as the director shares insights about the production.
Don’t miss this opportunity to witness a spectacular musical that resonates with both the young and young-at-heart. The show is rated PG for mild language and also includes loud noise, fog, and flashing lights. Tickets are available at the ISU Stephens’ box office and online. Ticket prices range from $12-$18. ISU Students can present their current and active Bengal ID for a free ticket.
