Save the Date - ISU Teaching and Learning Symposium

February 20, 2024

Save the date for the second annual ISU Teaching and Learning Symposium that will be held on Thursday, March 28.

This year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Jevin West, is an Idaho native. He was born in Pocatello and graduated from Hillcrest High School in Idaho Falls, where his parents still live today. He is now an Associate Professor at the University of Washington, where he co-founded the non-partisan Center for an Informed Public, a globally recognized research center focused on the issue of misinformation and its impact on democratic discourse. He has published more than 100 scholarly articles in computer science, human computer interaction, information science, biology, philosophy, law, and sociology. He is the co-author of the book, "Calling BS: The Art of Skepticism in a Data-Driven World," which helps non-experts question numbers, data, and statistics without an advanced degree in data science. He has given keynotes around the world and been quoted for his work featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, The Economist, Washington Post, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, BBC, NPR, Nature, Science, and many others. His knowledge of current technologies, including artificial intelligence, can help us spot misinformation in its many forms. His presentations, conversations, and activities will be useful to faculty, staff, and graduate students. Dr. West will also be providing a community keynote in the evening.

Lunch will be provided for the first 65 people who RSVP for the event. This year’s event is co-sponsored by the Cultural Events Committee, the College of Education, and the Program for Instructional Effectiveness (PIE). More information about Dr. West’s keynote and other programming for the day will be posted soon on the PIE website.
