Retirement Celebration for Dr. James "Byrd" Yizar

August 5, 2024

James

Dr. James “Byrd” Yizar started at ISU as a student athlete running track. As a high school graduate from Los Angeles, coming to Pocatello was both a climate and culture shock for Byrd. Fast forward 40+ years. Byrd earned three degrees, held leadership positions in multiple divisions across ISU, and served our community in various volunteer roles. While the climate shock (specifically the winters) still catches him off guard, Byrd has never wavered in the fight to break down stereotypes and to highlight the importance of improving cultural awareness in our community. Above all else, Byrd has always exemplified the heart of education – it is all about the students.

As his co-workers in the Student Success Center, while we will miss his big smile and even bigger personality, it is our honor to invite the ISU community to join us in celebrating Dr. James “Byrd” Yizar’s 40 years of service at Idaho State University and giving him a warm send-off.
