June 6, 2024

Characters in the play Wizard of Oz including Dorothy, Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow walk on a yellow brick road with green grass around them and blue skies above them.

Idaho State University is thrilled to announce the upcoming Summer Community Theatre production of "The Wizard of Oz," proudly sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance of Idaho.

The artistic team, cast, and crew consist of community members, ISU students, faculty, and staff of all ages, promising a vibrant and diverse representation of talent. Directed by ISU theatre faculty Jef Petersen and featuring the musical direction of Diana Livingston Friedley, the production is set to deliver an unforgettable experience.

Speaking about the upcoming musical, Petersen expressed, "Working as the director of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ for the Farm Bureau Community Summer Theatre has been an honor and a true joy. As I near the end of my very first year in Pocatello it has become abundantly clear that this is a community that loves its performing arts, and loves working together to create spectacular and inspiring work.” Petersen expresses his gratitude to the community by saying, “Thank you to all of the Pocatellans who have poured their time and hearts into this performance. And an especially huge thank you to our generous sponsor, Farm Bureau, without whom this production would not be possible.”

Livingston Friedley commented, "There are a number of shows where artists and audience members feel nostalgia and joy when remembering their first experience with a given work. ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is one of those theatrical pieces that elicits those memories for everyone and every age!”

On the music in the show, she continues, “Every song from this iconic work will be represented in our production of the ‘Wizard of Oz.’ Music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg won an Academy Award for Best Song with "Over the Rainbow." One special number that we're including is the "Jitterbug," a deleted scene in the original production. Audience members will enjoy hearing the wonderful harmony in the ensemble parts as well as the lush orchestral score.”

Adding to the grandeur of the production, a live 12-piece orchestra directed by Geoffrey Friedley will accompany the performances.

The show will run from June 21 to 22 and on June 24 and from June 27 to 29, with all shows commencing at 7:30 pm in the Bistline Theatre at the Stephens Performing Arts Center.

A special sneak peek of the performance will be presented at the Pocatello Farmer's Market on June 8 at 10:30 a.m., providing a glimpse of the magic in store for audiences. ISU's School of Performing Arts eagerly anticipates welcoming the community to this spectacular production and extends heartfelt gratitude to Farm Bureau Insurance of Idaho for their generous support and sponsorship of this beloved community tradition.
