Idaho State University Students Excel in Essay Contest

Two English students received awards in the first-year composition essay contest which concluded in May 2024.
Chloe Lemmon secured first place with her paper titled "Ethics in Invasive Species Management." Lemmon's work explores the delicate balance between ecological concerns and ethical considerations in conservation efforts. Her essay demonstrates an understanding of the complexities involved in managing invasive species while adhering to ethical principles in conservation biology.
Harley Vanella was awarded second place with a thought-provoking essay, "The U.S. Prison System: Healing or Harming?" Vanella's paper critically examines the current state of the U.S. criminal justice system, highlighting issues such as high incarceration rates, racial disparities, and the system's effectiveness in rehabilitation. The essay proposes potential reforms and alternative approaches to create a more just and effective system.
Both papers showcase the high caliber of critical thinking and research skills fostered in Idaho State University's first-year Composition program in the Department of English and Philosophy.
