Google Storage Limits Approaching

April 24, 2024

As you know, due to changes in Google's approach to digital data storage associated with education subscriptions, ISU has implemented data storage limits for Google accounts.

This is a reminder that all individual Google accounts must be below storage limit requirements by May 1. Beginning May 7 storage limits will be implemented and the Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) will continue the process of preparing ISU to be within Google’s university limits by June 30.

Please note that at no time will ITS delete files owned by current faculty, staff or students, even if accounts are over the storage limits. File owners are responsible for either deleting files or transferring files to alternative storage. This includes files in Google Drive along with files and email stored in Gmail.

What Happens After May 7
If you are over your allotted storage quota, you will still be able to access items in Google Drive, use Gmail, Google calendar, etc. You will not be able to add additional files or create new files in Google Drive, and changes made to existing files will not be saved until you are below storage limits. If you attempt to save new files or update files, you will be notified of the inability to do so until storage falls below the required limits

Every Google account at ISU is subject to the data limits for electronic storage space. Google storage limits vary depending on your role at ISU. Resources such as IT support, information forums, and ISU’s Google Storage Limits webpage are available to assist with this process.

Data Limits Based on Role

  • Faculty/Deans (including Emeritus): 50 GB
  • Adjunct Faculty: 30 GB
  • Affiliate Faculty: 20 GB
  • Staff: 20 GB
  • Temporary Employees: 20 GB
  • Students: 10 GB
  • Alumni (not employees) and Retirees: 5 GB (email only)

If you have multiple roles, the higher limit applies.
