Economics Degree Recognized as a STEM Degree by United States Department of Homeland Security

May 29, 2024

Beginning in Fall 2024, a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Economics from Idaho State University will be considered a degree in a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) discipline.

This change not only allows international students extended opportunities to find work in the United States after graduation, but also allows all students to have an economics degree with a more quantitative focus - something many employers want to see.

“Idaho State University is leading the charge in innovation within economics,” said Idaho Central Credit Union Vice President of Risk Management Patrick Pinheiro. “By making the degree more quantitative in nature, they are helping to close a tremendous gap in skills set within the industry. Few programs in the country offer such a strong curriculum. This could put Idaho State University on the same footing as the Ivy League schools. I am very excited for this new level of academic excellence Idaho State University has achieved!”

The United States Department of Education groups majors within Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes. By changing from the degree’s current code of 45.0601 (Economics, General) to 45.0603 (Econometrics and Quantitative Economics), Idaho State University will offer a degree with greater focus and emphasis on quantitative analysis - a high-demand skill in the current job market. A STEM degree recognized by the United States Department of Homeland Security also provides additional benefits to international students who hold an F-1 visa, making them eligible for a 24-month STEM optimal practical training (OPT) extension.

“This exciting development reflects our commitment and dedication to provide our students with the analytical skills, scientific methodologies, and a strong academic foundation that is important for success in today's labor market,” said Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Economics, Dr. Iris Buder. “By aligning with the STEM standards, we are preparing our students with the necessary tools and training to excel in an ever-increasing data-driven labor market landscape, where proficiency in the areas of quantitative analysis and econometric modeling is paramount.”

The BS in Economics has and will continue to be offered separately from a Bachelor of Applied Arts (BAA) in Economics. Students currently enrolled in the BS in Economics program will have the option to continue their current course of study, or transition to the STEM designated program path.
