Dr. Lisa Kidder Invited to Share Accessibility Expertise

February 15, 2024

Dr. Lisa Kidder, the Quality+ Program Manager at ISU, will be presenting at the 2024 QM Research Online Conference on February 16th, by invitation. This virtual event is focused on active/applied research in online learning and quality assurance.

Dr. Kidder’s presentation, titled "Beyond Aesthetics: Elevating Accessibility Across Campus," goes beyond the surface of making digital environments visually appealing. Instead, it delves into a single strategy everyone can use to embed accessibility at the point of creating any document - the use of Styles.

"The goal is to show how accessibility isn't just a technical issue, but rather one that benefits everyone," Dr. Kidder explains. "By focusing on one practical strategy that simplifies accessibility implementation, we can create a more inclusive and user-friendly digital environment."

This invitation to share her expertise is based on previous work including serving as chair for the General Standard 8 subcommittee for the Seventh Edition revision of the Quality Matters (QM) Rubric, obtaining the Texas Distance Learning Association Accessibility Specialist certification, and the integration of accessibility in ISU’s Quality+ program.

In addition, Dr. Kidder’s presentation from the QM Connect 2023 conference will be highlighted in a QM Success Story later this year. That presentation, titled “Sorting out Accessibility and Usability” draws upon her dissertation research and the experience serving on the QM Rubric Revision committee. “It was interesting how many people would confuse accessibility with usability and vice versa,” explains Dr. Kidder. “So, I created a presentation where the participants used card sorting to physically sort usability concepts and accessibility concepts. I am working to recreate that experience virtually for the QM Success Story.”

Dr. Kidder's participation in the QM Research Online Conference underscores ISU's commitment to providing high-quality, accessible online learning experiences. Her presentation offers valuable insights for educators and institutions striving to improve their online learning environments for all learners.
