College of Education Professors Publish Position Paper on Technology in the Mathematics Classroom

Dr. Cory A. Bennett, Professor of Mathematics Education, and Dr. Allison Roxburgh, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education, both in the Department of Teaching and Educational Studies, were lead writers on the publication of a new position paper for NCSM called Leading with Technology: Enhancing Mathematics for All Students.

Bennett and Roxburgh recently presented on this paper at the NCSM annual conference. Bennett, the Position Paper editor for NCSM, noted that this position paper centers on the purposeful integration of technology, recognizing its potential to reimagine mathematics education and help teachers empower students to thrive in an ever-evolving digital landscape. This landscape includes such things as the emergence of educational AI tools and digital mathematics games for learning, both of which are important and timely topics in today’s mathematics classrooms.

Dr. Katey Arrington, the President of NCSM, stated that this position paper “offers a refreshed take on the use of technology in mathematics education.”

Dr. Roxburgh, a national expert on the use of digital mathematics game, also recognized the importance of such a paper at this time. She commented that mathematics teacher leaders “need to support educators by bringing awareness to the effective and appropriate use of technology and helping teachers integrate tools that support the diverse needs of students in mathematics classrooms."
