ISU Student to Compete at National Fencing Tournamen
May 11, 2023
Idaho State University Sport Management student, Lucy Garcia Torres, had always dreamed of learning swordwork after seeing her favorite actors in movies or reading about characters in books.
In the Fall 2022 semester, Garcia Torres finally had the courage to enroll in an ISU novice fencing class where she brought her dream to a reality. Now, less than a year later, Lucy is planning to compete on the national level at the National Fencing Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona in June 2023.
“This has been the best decision I have ever made,” Garcia Torres said, “I am so excited to represent ISU and experience a national tournament.”
In addition to taking advantage of ISU's fencing classes, Garcia Torres participates in the Pocatello Fencing Club. She credits her success to her coaches, Phil Leavitt and Ashlee Rasmussen for pushing her to work hard and believe in herself.
Garcia Torres is also thankful for ISU’s extensive course offerings in physical education courses, and encourages other students to get out of their comfort zones, saying, “I definitely recommend any student who wants to try something different and unique to take advantage of ISU’s PEAC courses and try the fencing class.”
Garcia Torres is expected to graduate from the ISU Sport Management Program in the Fall 2025 semester where she looks forward to incorporating her athletic experiences into her future profession.
