Dr Jed Zirker Named Director of Dental Residency Program
July 10, 2023
The Department of Dental Sciences, Dental Residency Program and Family Dentistry clinics at Idaho State University (ISU) have a new director, as Dr. Jed Zirker takes the reins from Dr. Brian Crawford. Zirker oversees the programs at both the Pocatello and Meridian campus locations.
Zirker graduated from ISU in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in zoology and later obtained a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree (DMD) from Tufts Dental School in Boston, MA. He brings over 18 years of practice in Ammon, Idaho, and 16 years as an associate professor for ISU.
Dr. Brian Crawford, the outgoing program director, shared his perspective on the transition.
“Dr. Zirker was a resident in my first class of residents in 2003-2004. He completed the program and remained in the area to practice. He joined our clinical faculty a couple of years after that and has remained steadfast in his commitment to the program,” Crawford explains.
The transition took place in late 2022, marking a new chapter for ISU's dentistry program. Crawford adds, “With his experience and expertise, Dr. Zirker is a valuable addition to the Department of Dental Science and the Pocatello Family Dentistry clinic operated within it.”
Crawford’s extensive background in dentistry, including private practice and overseeing a dental hygiene program at a small community college in the midwest, made him a natural fit for the role of program director, which he assumed in 2007.
“My journey to becoming program director began in June of 2003 when I was recruited by Dr. Steve Friedrichsen,” Crawford said. “Starting as assistant program director, I worked closely with Dr. Friedrichsen to develop and refine the program.”
Under Dr. Crawford's leadership, the Department of Dental Science experienced substantial growth and enhancements over his nearly 15-year tenure. His involvement in organized dentistry, including roles with the American Dental Association, Idaho State Dental Association and the Idaho State Board of Dentistry, allowed him to promote the program and establish valuable connections.
Rex Force, vice president for health sciences and senior vice provost at ISU, expressed his confidence in the program's continued evolution and improvement under Dr. Zirker's guidance.
“Dr. Zirker brings a wealth of experience to the position and is a highly respected dentist known for his gentle and effective dental treatment,” says Force. “With the incredible work and commitment provided by Dr. Crawford over his many years, along with Dr. Zirker's extensive experience and knowledge, we are excited to see the program continue its mission of providing quality dental education and compassionate patient care.”
The dental residents at ISU complete a one-year program focused on providing comprehensive care in a variety of clinical settings, emphasizing rural, underserved, and at-risk populations. Each year there are four residents based in Pocatello and an additional four in Meridian. Throughout the year, these dentists provide dental care to approximately 4,500 patients, offering services at a sliding fee scale. The campus clinics cater to ISU students, faculty, and the wider community, providing comprehensive dental services.
