ISU Hosts Annual CarFit Event

October 9, 2023

Idaho State University wrapped up its annual CarFit event Friday, drawing dozens of community members to the Holt Arena for a hands-on experience aimed at enhancing driver safety and comfort.

CarFit is a nationwide educational initiative designed to enhance road safety, especially among mature drivers. This free program offers drivers the opportunity to ensure an optimal "fit" between them and their vehicles, emphasizing comfort, control, and confidence. More than 30 trained volunteers from ISU’s Master of Occupational Therapy and Occupational Therapy Assistant programs, armed with a checklist and a keen understanding of vehicular safety, provided drivers with invaluable information to help them make the necessary adjustments.

"I think my blind spots have shrunk considerably,” said Helena Rizor, an event attendee. “It will be safer to change lanes! Love it! It was quite useful, I thought."

Drivers were encouraged to pull into designated areas, where experts provided insights into several vehicle settings, including seat adjustments, mirror placements, and controls accessibility. Recommendations were made based on each driver's unique requirements, ensuring that they left the event more informed and secure about their driving.

"What a beautiful day to  provide a valuable service to the area's driving population, enhance the education of our future occupational therapy practitioners, and collaborate with our community partners,” said Anna Alexander, clinical instructor for the ISU College of Technology’s Occupational Therapy Assistant Program.

With yet another successful year in the books, Idaho State University looks forward to continuing its efforts in championing driver safety and education in the coming years.
