ISU Debate Brings Home Awards in Early Competition

October 5, 2023

Two novice Idaho State debaters worked their way into the silver  rounds last weekend during the Fran Tanner Open at the College of Southern Idaho.

Emma Grow and Shea Elordi claimed individual medals at the competition. Pocatello native Trey Mitchell took tournament-bronze in individual IPDA. Freshman Mandy Hesby also chalked up accolades in Individual Events. She claimed took bronze Extemporaneous speaking. Sophomore Isaac Brambila was also awarded a certificates for participation in the second Hispanic Serving Institution Showcase observance held by CSI. The team also brought the gold achievement award to Pocatello.

The award acknowledges the team who accumulate the most participation points per member. The prior weekend, the team participated in “THE SIR,” a warm-up event hosted virtually by Carroll College in Helena, Mont.

“The team is competing at an incredibly high level for early season and a lot of freshmen. They’ve worked hard, and they have earned these wins” said Andy Christensen, the team’s assistant coach.

The team’s next major tournament will be the Steve Hunt Classic, hosted by Lewis and Clark College in Portland mid-October.  The ISU Debate squad is supported by the College of Arts and Letters, the Department of Communication, Media & Persuasion, and the ASISU.
