Creating Inclusive Writing Classes at PWIs: Challenges and Opportunities

October 30, 2023

The Department of English & Philosophy invites you to a discussion about how to create inclusive classrooms with guest speaker Professor Todd Ruecker from the University of Nevada, Reno. The focus will be on writing classrooms in particular, but we anticipate that the content and discussion will be applicable to efforts to make all classrooms more inclusive.

Drawing from his experiences teaching and researching at both Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs), Professor Ruecker will talk about how he and program faculty have worked to create inclusive spaces at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he has served as Director of the Core Writing Program since 2019. He will draw on curricular examples and data collected from faculty and students on various initiatives, including the development of a corequisite model similar to ISU’s plus courses and the introduction of a reading unit focused on valuing language varieties in the writing classroom.
