ISU Oboler Library presents “Distilled Life”– still life oil paintings by Gabrielle Sivitz
September 27, 2017
POCATELLO – The Idaho State University Eli M. Oboler Library is presenting an exhibition of oil paintings by Gabrielle Sivitz running from Oct. 3 to Jan. 3.
An artist’s reception will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Oct. 19 in the library’s first floor art space. The event is free and light refreshments will be available.
Sivitz is the recipient of a 2017 professional development grant through the Idaho Commission on the Arts with the National Endowment for the Arts. She works as a representational artist and art instructor in her studio in Old Town, Pocatello. Her still life paintings are a window into moments distilled from the rush of time. Frequently, they are vignettes: a break in the action. Interesting forms and the play of light and shadow on everyday objects inhabit her paintings. A little humor sometimes appears in her paintings as well.
Sivitz’s first experience painting a still life, under the guidance of local artist Danene Taysom, was a pivotal one. After working as a freelance natural history illustrator for many years, Sivitz was intrigued by the novelty of painting a subject that did not move or fly away. To further her skills, she studied oil painting and printmaking at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Four years after her first forays into the genre, Sivitz is still delving into the fascinating world of still life, challenging herself with each new piece. Along the way, she has discovered a deep love of painting glass and pears.
The exhibit can be viewed whenever the library is open. The library’s complete hours are listed online at http://isu.libcal.com/hours/. The library is located at 9th Avenue and Martin Luther King on the Idaho State University campus in Pocatello,
