June 3, 2016
POCATELLO – Idaho State University’s College of Arts and Letters will hold summer camps for middle and high school students in Pocatello this summer for a variety of interests.
“Our goal is to get students on our campus to see what ISU can offer them at a university in their own backyard,” said Kandi Turley-Ames, dean of the College of Arts and Letters. “We have great opportunities for students in all of our departments, and we hope these summer camps will help them see that.”
First, ISU’s Summer Institute of Piano and Strings will be held June 20-24 campus. The ISU Piano Institute and Idaho State Civic Symphony created the summer program to create a unique experience for pianists and string players. Students will have the opportunity to rehearse, coach and perform chamber music on ISU’s campus, and collaborate with ISU and Idaho State Civic Symphony musicians. The week will also consist of solo and collaborative performance study, music classes, ensembles and other group activities. For more information on this institute, visit thesymphony.us.
Next, the Bengal Marching Band will hold its annual Marching Band Camp from July 12 to 14. This year, more than 400 high school students will gather on ISU’s campus to learn about woodwind and brass techniques, drumline and mallet instruments, section leadership, conducting and flag and rifle technique. The camp will feature ISU faculty members and guest instructors from other institutions. At the end of the camp, the students will hold a final performance on July 14 at 6 p.m. For more information on ISU’s Marching Band Camp, visit isu.edu/marchingband.
New this year, ISU will hold a Conservatory Theatre Camp July 25-29 at the Stephens Performing Arts Center. The camp was created to give junior high and high school students the opportunity to learn from ISU theatre professors, community members and seniors in the theatre program. The camp will include hands-on learning, keynote presentations and classes on performance, technical aspects of theatre, costuming and more. At the end of the camp, students will have the opportunity to perform for a chance to win scholarships.
