Idaho State University’s nuclear engineering laboratory to host merit badge clinic for 100 Boy Scouts on Nov. 12
November 9, 2016
POCATELLO – The nuclear engineering laboratory at Idaho State University will host a nuclear science Boy Scout merit badge clinic for about 100 boys on Nov. 12.
The clinic will be from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Although this is not the first merit badge clinic the department has held, it is the first one of this magnitude.
The clinic, for boys ages 11-18, will begin with a pre-course exam to assess the Scouts’ knowledge of nuclear science before any of the workshops begin.
Throughout the course of the day, the scouts will learn about the dangers of radiation to humans, environment and wildlife. They will also learn about the difference between radiation exposure and contamination.
The Scouts will describe the radiation hazard symbol and describe how and why people must use radiation carefully.
The clinic will also include activities that will have the Scouts build 3-D atoms and practice defining them.
Activities will conclude with a final course examination.
