ISU Electrical Engineering Seminar on ‘Fundamentals of Arc Flash’ set Nov. 9

Kyle Bennett will deliver the seminar "Fundamentals of Arch Flash" at noon Friday, Nov. 9.

The seminar, part of the ISU Department of Electrical Engineering's EE Seminars, will be held in Room 7 of the Eli Oboler Library on the Pocatello campus and will be broadcast to Room 311 in the Center for Higher Education at University Place in Idaho Falls.

The talk's abstract states: "The term 'Arc Flash' has become increasingly more important within the past few decades as industry workplace safety regulations are requiring and enforcing safer work environments for those working on energized electrical equipment. Many variables must be considered when evaluating an electrical system during arc flash conditions. Voltage levels, working distances, system protection settings and characteristics, and equipment construction all have an impact of the hazards an employee is exposed to during an arc flash. This presentation will address the basics of arc flash; provide the basic framework for how to analyze the arc flash hazards and various techniques used by electrical engineers to mitigate dangers of arc flash. For each mitigation technique, associated pitfalls and complications will be addressed as well."
