Monsanto awards scholarships to ISU welding students
August 15, 2011
Idaho State University Welding students, Daniel Alcala and Steve Lara have each been awarded a Monsanto Welding Scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic year. Each student will receive $2,500.
Monsanto, in partnership with the ISU College of Technology, began awarding the Monsanto Welding Scholarship in 2008. Eligible candidates are female or minority students who have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
Alcala chose to pursue a welding education because he likes working with his hands and creating things. Daniel is a foreign student who, upon completion of the program, hopes to become employed as a structural welder. He stated, "I always dream of working as a welder in one of the tallest buildings of the world and working in a construction company to build bridges and buildings for our society."
Lara grew up in a Spanish speaking home with a talent for welding. Steve commented, "I chose this career path because, I really enjoy building thing that will be put to good use and on which we all rely on, whether it be a roll cage for a car or five miles of pipe out in the middle of nowhere. By the time I graduate from the program with my associates, I will be ready for real world welding and be able to keep a good job with the skills I have acquired over the years."
The ISU College of Technology Welding program accepts students in August and January each year. For more information about the ISU Welding program contact student services at 208-282-2622.
