‘Glaciers, Earthquakes of Sawtooth Range’ topic of Idaho State University geosciences Professor Glenn Thackray on Oct. 20

The Idaho State University Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi will host ISU geosciences Professor and Chair Glenn Thackray as he presents, "Glaciers and Earthquakes of the Sawtooth Range" at 7 p.m. on Oct. 20 in the upstairs loft of the Portneuf Valley Brewing, 615 S. First Ave., Pocatello.

The Sawtooth Mountains have experienced a long history of glacier action and mountain uplift, punctuated by large earthquakes.  Glaciers have carved the soaring peaks and deep valleys, and created the large lakes at the foot of the range.  On the front of the Sawtooth range is a fault that is at least 25 miles long and could be as long as 40 miles. It is located on the eastern edge of the range and comes within about five miles from the town of Stanley. A portion of it runs through the upper end of Redfish Lake, and it has caused large earthquakes in the recent geologic past.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, and is the nation's oldest, largest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Its chapters are on more than 300 campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
