Seventy scientists from around the world to attend Idaho State University health physics workshop

Seventy scientists from around the world will attend the Idaho State University 2010 Health Physics Society Professional Development School June 23-26 on the ISU Pocatello campus.

This professional development course will be conducted by the ISU Department of Physics’ health physics program.

Health physics is the profession that manages the beneficial use of ionizing radiation while protecting workers and the public from potential hazards. The Health Physics Society is a scientific organization of professionals who specialize in radiation safety. Today its nearly 6,000 members represent all scientific and technical areas related to radiation safety including academia, government, medicine, research and development, analytical services, consulting and industry.

This year’s course at ISU will focus on internal dosimetry, which is measuring the dose of radiation emitted by a radioactive source. This course is intended for novice internal dosimetrist, a scientist who makes these measurements. This course will be heavily structured to enhance the educational value of materials present. Most courses held on this topic in the past were intended for individuals with advanced skills in current techniques so this one is unique in helping novices in the field.

The instructors in this summer’s professional development school are all recognized experts in academia and internal dosimetry.
