Idaho State University Symphonic Band will perform concert Oct. 15

The Idaho State University Symphonic Band will perform its first concert of the semester Friday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Joseph C. and Cheryl H. Jensen Grand Concert Hall in the ISU L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center. 

The Symphonic Band is directed by Dr. Patrick Brooks, ISU Director of Bands.

The band's first concert will feature import standards of the band literature, beginning with two well-known marches by John Phillip Sousa: "King and Cotton March" and the "Gallant 7^th March." The earliest composition to be performed will be the "Overture in F" by Etienne-Henri Mehul, who composed it in 1795 during the height of the French Revolution.

A pair of important works for band by composer John Barnes Chance will also be performed: the intense and rhythmic "Incantation and Dance," and tuneful "Variations on a Korean Folksong."

Guest soloist for the evening will be Michael Helman, principle horn in the Idaho State Civic Symphony, and adjunct instructor of horn at Idaho State University. He will perform Camille Saint Seans "Morceau de Concert." A popular solo for French hornists, this work is an especially effective vehicle for showcasing the wide range of emotions found in Romantic music.

The ISU Symphonic Band is comprised of 54 students from various degree programs throughout the university.

Admission information: ISU Students Free, Pre-college Students $2, ISU Faculty and Staff $3, General admission is $5. Children under 6 will not be admitted.
