Idaho State University Davis Gallery to feature woven works by art professor Rudy Kovacs

The first exhibition of fall 2010 at the Idaho State University John B. Davis Gallery is "Idaho Markings as Narrative: The Woven Form" by ISU art professor Rudy Kovacs.

An opening reception will be held Monday, Aug. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibition dates are Aug. 24 – Sept. 16.

Kovacs is currently department chair for the Department of Art and Pre-Architecture at Idaho State University. His work explores the hand-jacquard weaving process. He has worked to develop a specific approach that uses computers to continue the theoretical principles of weaving with his interest in representational art.

Photographs of places he has been and seen which he documents himself are combined with computer design and weaving, this has allowed Kovacs to be involved with many processes at one time.  This new approach with photographic images in his textile work has urged him to start investigating photography as an art form and to begin studying the history of photography.

Recently his work has involved imagery from Italy (1995-1996), Peru (1988), China (1983), Singapore (2002), and now Idaho. 

"I want my work to be a visual journey of places I have been and seen, of inner feelings or spiritual rejuvenation," Kovacs said. "For me, weaving is a means of communication, a conceptual expression of my attitude toward art, space, and time, a means that holds a rich historical and ethnic definition of 'cloth,' the thread of life, a process."
