Mass communication students’ videos recognized

Two broadcasting students from the Idaho State University Department of Mass Communication have recently been recognized for video productions completed as part of their class assignments.

The Magnolia Student Video Festival has recognized Vanessa K. Major, a junior, for her production of an original music video. Vanessa wrote and performed the song “In the Spring” as well as produced the video, which is one of only 29 finalists in the video festival. The production of the music video was completed as an independent study course during the fall 2008 semester.  

Curtis Steed, a senior, was awarded the EMPixx award for his editing on “The Sock Goblin” a student film produced for the Film-style Production class (MC 360). “The Sock Goblin” was written, produced and directed all by mass communication students and shot on 35mm film with the assistance of Richard A. Smith and RAS Productions.

The University Film & Video Association sponsors the Magnolia Student Video Festival. The second annual Magnolia Student Video Festival will be held April 2–3 at Southern Arkansas University Magnolia. The screening of finalists and winning movies is held in conjunction with the Magnolia Student Video Festival. MSVF is open to college/university students and high school students in the United States and foreign countries. The videos submitted to the festival are judged on the basis of creativity, originality, subject, genre and technique.

The EMPixx Awards, created in 2008, are sponsored by The American Pixel Academy, an organization founded by professionals and educators in the pixel media. The purpose of this organization is to connect professionals in the field with educators who are preparing the next generation of professionals. Ohio University Southern administers the Student EMPixx Awards competition.
