The Idaho State University Outdoor Adventure Center will offer a “Beginning Kayak Workshop” June 10-14.

The kayak workshop is a concentrated course to help individuals develop the knowledge and skills necessary to run easy whitewater rivers in a kayak.  It is a solid introductory course for the beginner and a good refresher for the individual who already has some kayaking experience.

The first session begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, at the ISU Outdoor Adventure Center located in the lower level of the Pond Student Union on the ISU Pocatello campus. The workshop will move to Jensen Grove in Blackfoot from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and then to the Reed Gymnasium swimming pool from 3 to 5 p.m.

On June 11 the class will float a calm section of a river and have a pool session; on June 12, participants will practice on the Aberdeen Canal and have a pool session; and on June 13-14 will have an overnight float down the Blackfoot River.

The workshop fee is $160 or $130 if you have your own equipment. Workshop fees do not include food or housing.

Dana Olson-Elle, the workshop instructor, has taught kayaking at Idaho State for over 20 years. She has extensive experience running rivers throughout the western United States, Costa Rica and Europe.  She is an American Canoe Association Certified Instructor Trainer for kayaking.
