First case of H1N1 flu in ISU student confirmed by University officials

Idaho State University officials confirmed the first case of H1N1 influenza in an ISU student Friday.

"This was a mild to moderate case," said Mike Doyle, a physician assistant and the assistant medical director of the Student Health Center. "H1N1 is less serious even than seasonal flu in those that are healthy individuals."

The confirmed case was in a student not living in university housing. Test results take approximately five days to receive, and the student had already recovered before confirmation was received.

University officials are following the institution's flu plan, which is available for review online.

Health experts at the University are reminding students, faculty and staff to:

• practice good hand hygiene by washing hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing;

• cover mouths and noses with a tissue, or face into elbows or shoulders, when coughing or sneezing;

• avoid touching eyes, noses, or mouths, which spreads germs.

"The most important thing that can be done for any viral seasonal flu or H1N1 is to take proper prevention measures and be educated," Doyle said.

Individuals who are symptomatic are advised to call their health care provider or the Student Health Center before visiting the office, or call if they have chronic health issues such as asthma, diabetes, emphysema, cancer, heart disease, blood disorders. Those with chest pain or difficulty breathing should call or go to the health center, located at 990 Cesar Chavez Ave., or emergency room right away.
