Kasiska College, ISU-Boise research days set April 4

Is there a connection between the amount of money spent on anti-smoking efforts and the prevalence of tobacco use in Idaho?

Are dental hygienists receiving sufficient education about diabetes and patient care?

Both questions are among dozens that faculty and students will explore during the 19th annual ISU Kasiska College of Health Professions Research Day in Pocatello, which will be held in conjunction with Idaho State University-Boise’s first annual Research Day from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 4.

“Building Evidence” is the theme on both campuses. The ISU-Boise event will be held at 12301 W. Explorer Drive; the KCHP Research Day will be held in the Pond Student Union Building on the ISU Pocatello campus.

In Boise, faculty and graduate students will present research findings in a variety of health-related fields, including the perception of HIV within Idaho’s Hispanic community and an ongoing study comparing the language acquisition rates of two deaf siblings implanted with cochlear implants.

In Pocatello, there will be seven oral paper presentations and 18 poster presentations on topics ranging from the effect of increased fruit and vegetable intake on pregnancy outcomes to a cultural understanding of health looking at American Indian/Alaska Native traditional health practices.

Guest and keynote speakers include Kevin Shea, M.D., Intermountain Orthopaedics specialists, Boise; infectious disease specialist Denny Stevens, M.D., Ph.D., and research scientist Amy Bryant, Ph.D. Both Stevens and Bryant are affiliated with the Boise Veterans Administration Medical Center. Their remarks will be broadcast from Boise to Pocatello via a video link.

At noon in Boise, ISU research administrator Deb Easterly, Ed.D., will address issues that researchers could consider when collaborating with community partners.
